Custom Design Process

Custom jewellery should feel simple.

You choose the design you truly want, including the diamond shape or centre-stone style that gives the ring its personality. We then help match the stone, metal, structure and specifications to your budget before guiding the piece through design, casting, setting and final finish.

OgilvieGems Custom Design Process
The Simple Version
01

Choose the design

Pick the design you genuinely love most, including the diamond shape or centre-stone silhouette that gives the ring its personality. This is where oval, round, pear, emerald, radiant, cushion, marquise and other shapes start to matter.

02

Choose your stone

Choose whether the centre should be a lab-grown diamond, natural mined diamond, moissanite, sapphire, ruby, emerald, salt and pepper diamond or another meaningful gemstone.

03

Choose your metal

Rose gold, white gold, yellow gold, platinum or palladium silver. The metal sets the colour, feel, practicality and long-term character of the piece.

04

Get your quote

Send us your design, preferred stone, metal and budget. We quote around the goal, then intelligently refine the specifications to balance beauty, durability and budget.

05

Approve and create

Once approved, your design moves through CAD development, production, casting, inspection, stone setting, polishing and final quality control before becoming a finished Ogilvie piece.

Shape, stone and metal are three separate decisions.

Many people think they are choosing “a ring,” but a custom ring is really built from a few clear decisions. First, choose the design and shape you desire. Then choose the centre stone. Then choose the metal. Once those are clear, the quote becomes far more accurate and the design process becomes easier.

1. Design & shape

This is the visual personality of the ring. Oval feels elongated and elegant. Round feels timeless. Emerald feels architectural. Pear feels soft and distinctive. The shape affects the entire setting.

2. Centre stone

The stone choice controls brilliance, colour, value and meaning. A lab-grown diamond, mined diamond, moissanite, sapphire or sentimental gemstone can all create a very different result.

3. Metal

The metal controls tone and long-term practicality. Yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, platinum and palladium silver each change the look, wear and maintenance of the piece.

Imagine every ring cost the same.

Imagine you walked into the world’s greatest imaginary jewellery store. Every ring in the world is there. Every diamond shape, gemstone, colour, clarity, metal and style.

But here is the catch: every single ring is R10 000 or R100 000, whichever you decide. Not one is more expensive than another.

Which one would you choose?

You would choose based on desire, not price. That is the design direction we need to quote you on. The one you actually want. Then we match the diamond shape, centre stone, metal and specifications to your real budget, whether that is R15 000, R50 000 or more.

Start with the ring you actually want.

Send us the one design you love most. We will help shape the quote around your budget, material choice and practical design requirements.

1. Design & Shape

Every custom piece begins with the design direction and centre-stone shape.

This can be a photograph, sketch, saved Instagram post, Pinterest image or even a simple description. You do not need to understand jewellery terminology. You simply need to show us the direction that feels most like you, including whether the ring feels more oval, round, pear, emerald, radiant, cushion, marquise, princess, vintage, minimal, soft, bold or architectural.

In most cases, one strong reference creates more clarity than countless mixed inspirations. The shape is part of the design decision because it affects the setting, proportions, finger coverage, wedding band fit and overall personality of the ring.

2. Centre Stone Selection

Once the design and shape are clear, the next major decision is the centre stone.

Available options may include:

  • Lab-grown diamonds
  • Natural mined diamonds
  • Moissanite
  • Sapphires
  • Rubies
  • Emeralds
  • Salt and pepper diamonds
  • Sentimental or heirloom stones

The centre stone affects brilliance, colour, value, durability, certification and the final personality of the piece.

3. Metal Selection

Your metal choice influences the colour, feel, durability and character of the final piece.

Available options include rose gold, white gold, yellow gold, platinum and palladium silver.

The design and centre stone remain the vision. The metal then helps set the tone, long-term practicality and final budget direction.

4. Quotation

Once we understand the design direction, diamond shape or gemstone shape, stone preference, metal selection and intended budget, we prepare a quotation around the piece itself.

The design remains the vision. The specifications are what shape the final cost.

Stone size, stone type, setting detail, metal choice and structural complexity can all be refined while preserving the essence of the original design.

5. Design Development

Once approved, the piece moves into digital design development.

This is where proportions, structure, setting details and overall balance are refined before creation begins. The purpose is clarity, precision and confidence before the physical piece is produced.

6. Creation

The design now moves into creation. The piece is prepared, cast and carefully refined through the early stages of craftsmanship before moving toward finishing and stone setting.

Beautiful jewellery should not only look exceptional. It should be built with the correct structure, proportions and practical wear expectations.

7. Refinement, Setting & Review

Every piece is carefully reviewed throughout the creation process to ensure the final structure, finish and detailing meet our production standards.

Once refined and prepared, the piece moves into stone setting. Each stone is set carefully according to the approved design, ensuring both elegance and long-term security.

8. Final Finish

The final piece is polished, refined and carefully completed before collection or delivery.

The goal is never simply to manufacture a ring. The goal is to create a piece that feels intentional, balanced and deeply personal.

Most custom pieces are completed within approximately three weeks from final design approval.

Common Questions

Should I choose the diamond shape before the stone and metal?

Yes, in most cases. The diamond shape or centre-stone shape forms part of the design direction because it affects the setting, proportions, finger coverage, wedding band fit and overall personality of the ring. Once the desired shape is clear, the stone type and metal choice become easier to refine.

Do I need to understand jewellery terminology?

Not at all. Most clients come to us with a photograph, inspiration image or simple idea. We guide the entire process from there.

Should I send multiple inspiration images?

Usually, less is more. One strong reference often creates far more clarity than a large collection of mixed ideas. Choose the design you would truly want above all else.

Can the same design work across different budgets?

Often, yes. The overall design direction can remain similar while elements such as stone size, stone type, metal selection and detailing are refined around the intended budget.

Do I approve the design before production begins?

Yes. Before creation begins, the design is developed digitally to refine the proportions, structure and overall balance of the piece with clarity and precision.
